Colon hydrotherapy has been shown, time and time again, to promote a healthier lifestyle and a better overall well-being for its users.

In fact, a 2008 study done at the Department of Colorectal Surgery, University Hospital Maastricht in The Netherlands, examined the success of colonic irrigation for defecation disorders, when standard treatments and surgery have failed.

In the study, patients were divided into three groups: those with constipation (Group A), fecal incontinence (Group B), or both (Group C). The Biotrol Irrimatic pump was used for the colonic sessions.

Apart from the study itself, patients completed a questionnaire at the time of the procedure and again after 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months.

The study overwhelming improved the disorders of patients, with all patients in Group A seeing an improvement in incontinence. In group B, 30 percent of patients reported an improvement in their bowel activity. And in group C, 60 percent of patients became pseudo-continent for feces, and 3 of 10 reported improvement in constipation.

All in all, the group of physicians involved in the study at the hospital concluded that colonic irrigation is an effective alternative treatment for defecation disorders.
