It’s a common story. You get a sinus infection and decide to go to the doctor. They prescribe an antibiotic and a few days later you start feeling better. But the truth is that antibiotics do very little for sinusitis other than disturb the natural balance in your body.

A recent study for Washington University discovered that people who received an antibiotic for a sinus infection didn’t have milder symptoms – or a reduction in symptoms – any more than those taking a placebo. In fact, there was no real difference at all between those that received an antibiotic and those who received a placebo.

Sinusitis generally goes away within about 10 days regardless of whether it’s a bacterial or viral infection. But there are plenty of ways to treat your infection without the use of drugs.

Alternative healing

We recommend a number of alternative treatments for our patients with sinus problems. First, of course, we recommend a colonic, which can clear toxins and bad bacteria from the body. Colon hydrotherapy gets the body ready for healing. Lymphatic massage is also vital to the function of the immune system, which helps stimulate the movement of lymph throughout the body.

Here are a few other suggestions:

  • Use a neti pot: neti pots are ideal for irrigating your sinuses with clean, distilled water. For ever more cleansing power, add in a small amount of saline solution – add one tablespoon of sea salt to distilled water.
  • Take a steam bath: steam can really open up the sinuses. Take a hot bath and breathe in eucalyptus to open up your nasal passages.
  • Eat the right food: spicy foods can really unclog your sinuses. Try organic food like horseradish or wasabi.
  • Drink green tea: green tea has plenty of immune boosting properties. Drink hot green tea throughout the day to stimulate the immune system and to moisten your mucous membranes.

Prevent a sinus infection

The best defense is a good offense. With just a few healthy lifestyle choices, you can prevent an infection in your sinuses:

  • Eat right: a diet based around organic food can really boost the health of your body. Check out our organic food diet guide for more information.
  • Sleep right: proper sleep is vital for the immune function of the body. Without sleep, you’re body doesn’t have the right tools for proper healing.
  • Exercise right: exercise not only boosts the immune system, it stimulates connections within the body and mind.

Along with eating, sleeping and exercising right, we recommend colon hydrotherapy and lymphatic massage on a regular basis. Both will keep your body ready to fight an infection.
