Antacids can be helpful for short-term and acute acid reflux symptoms, but is it good for long-term use? According to the Mayo Clinic, antacids are meant to be used for only short periods up to two weeks. Long-term use of antacids can cause health problems and have adverse side effects. That’s why many people with acid reflux are looking to simple lifestyle changes and colon hydrotherapy to cure their ill.

What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux, or heartburn, is stomach acid that is flowing back up into the esophagus. Symptoms include feeling a burning sensation in your chest or tasting food or liquid in the back of your throat. Most people have occasional heartburn, and it isn’t a major cause for concern. But those with consistent symptoms might have a more serious problem.

How do antacids work?

Antacids work by neutralizing the acid within the stomach. There are three different kind of antacid: magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide. All of these can cause short-term and long-term side effects.

Some long-term side effects include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Kidney damage
  • Milk-alkali syndrome
  • Weak bones
  • Nervousness
  • Nausea or vomiting

Alternative medicine

Instead of relying on antacids to neutralize your stomach acid, simple lifestyle changes and regular colon hydrotherapy can often prevent and get rid of heartburn. Exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can greatly reduce heartburn – extra pounds put pressure on your stomach and push acid into your esophagus. Try to lose one or two pounds per week to slowly work your way down to a healthy weight. You can also eat smaller meals, avoid tight clothing and elevate your head during sleep.
